While Israel is lifting all quarantine restrictions, with the exception of wearing masks in public places, scientists at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center have prepared a gift for the countries that are still far from defeating the coronavirus.

The new drug EXO-CD24, as shown by the first phase of trial, calms down the so-called cytokine storm in literally a matter of a few days. The cytokine storm, in which the immune system begins to fight against itself, is the main cause of death in COVID-19 patients. The first groups of patients taking EXO-CD24 treatment were discharged from hospitals within a few days after admission. The effectiveness of the treatment was 96%.

Since, due to the extremely small number of COVID-19 cases currently in Israel and absence of enough patients to test the drug on, the further second and third phases of the trial will be taking place abroad. Sourasky has no shortage of proposals from the countries where the incidence rate is still high. The drug is currently being tested in Greece. Georgia has also agreed to carry out the trial; at the same time, negotiations are being held with India, Brazil, Portugal, Costa Rica and the Czech Republic.

If the next phases of the trials are as successful as the first, Israel could reap significant financial benefits from its development, as the number of COVID-19 cases in the world is still high and the main threat of the coronavirus in the form of a cytokine storm has not yet been eliminated.
