The latest compact gunfire detection system of Israeli IAI virtually nullifies enemy’s attempts to disguise its position
The latest compact gunfire detection system of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) virtually nullifies enemy’s attempts to disguise its position. Wherever snipers, machine gunners or grenade launchers shoot from, their position will be instantly fixed by a device called OTHELLO-P and passed to the troops for suppression.
Although development of OTHELLO began even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the IAI management claims that the nature of the fighting in the current war has been carefully analyzed. The small size OTHELLO with 360-degree optical and acoustic coverage, working in all weather conditions day and night, can be installed anywhere — on vehicles and inside buildings, without telling on its efficiency. The result, according to the developers, will be “the dominance of the forces of good on the battlefield.”
It is not yet known whether OTHELLO will be supplied to Ukraine. IAI only vaguely commented that, given the increased interest in the system, the number of customers for demonstration has been limited.
Attention is also drawn to the way OTHELLO has been developed. This sensor is a product of IAI’s Innovation Center functioning by startup principle, sort of like a technical support department in the James Bond movies. Any ideas are given a chance to be realized here, and it may take only 13 weeks from the birth of an idea to the appearance of a working sample.
OTHELLO-P will be presented at the Eurosatory weaponry exhibition in Paris which opens next Monday. All novelties at this exhibition will be positioned in one way or another taking into account the war in Ukraine.
