It is 1 kilometer from Sderot to the Gaza Strip. That’s why we were given bulletproof vests. We saw the consequences of October 7 with our own eyes, including the houses visited by the Hamas militants.

The city was one of the first to be attacked. After fighting with the police and the local population, the militants occupied the police station. IDF forces that arrived to help surrounded the terrorists, and then decided to bulldoze the building along with the militants.

The current mayor of Sderot, Alon Davidi, and its former mayor, former Minister of Defense of Israel Amir Peretz, spoke about how the city survived the attack and about the current situation.

Peretz headed the Ministry of Defense during the Second Lebanon War in 2006. However, he is also known for being the ideologue behind the creation of the Iron Dome. It was he who insisted that the project be given an emergency program status that needs to be fulfilled as quick as possible.

It took only months from the beginning of development to the first test intercepts. In January 2007, a Grad projectile and a Qassam rocket were successfully intercepted, and in 2011 the first battery went on combat alert mission, protecting an area of 1,500 square kilometers.

On October 7 and in the following days, the Iron Domes saved thousands of lives.
