“I don’t know if we’ll get out of here. But I have no regrets,” Alexander Dubovik addressed his family in one of his last videos recorded on the battlefield. Alexander was near Bakhmut, his family was in Israel.

Born in the city of Dnipro, thirty four year old Dubovik made Aliyah to Israel, where he married and had two children. Like many other Israelis, he could not stay at home after February 24. He volunteered to defend the country he was born and raised in.

On December 23, 2022 near Bakhmut, Alexander was severely injured and captured. Instead of aiding him the russian forces shot him dead. His identity could be established only now.

Leaving for Ukraine last February, Alexander told his wife: “If I don’t do this, how would I be able to look my children in the eyes?”

There is no official data on the number of Israeli nationals fighting on the side of Ukraine. Various sources claim that we may be talking about hundreds of volunteers. According to some reports, about twenty Israelis have already died in the Russia-Ukraine war.
