In Kyiv, one of the streets may soon be named after the Righteous among the Nations
The decision in favor of renaming has already been made by the relevant committees of the Kyiv State City Administration. Now it’s the turn of the Kyivans. It is possible to vote for naming the street near Babyn Yar after the Righteous in the “Kyiv Digital” app.
The future Street of the Righteous is situated in the part of the present Orangereina Street between Dorogozhytska and Yurii Illienko streets. This section is a part of the way, which became the last one for tens of thousands of Jews at the end of September 1941. It was along this street that they, following the order of the Nazi occupation authorities, went to Babyn Yar, where they were shot.
The naming of the street after the Righteous is a tribute to the Ukrainians who saved Jews during the Holocaust. According to Yad Vashem, there are currently 2,691 Righteous Among the Nations in Ukraine. Unfortunately, not all the facts of the rescue have been officially registered. Ukrainian historians and Holocaust researchers estimate the real number of Ukrainian Righteous Among the Nations at 15,000.
